Seven Tips for Removing Stress and Anxiety from your Day

We all experience anxiety and stress when things in life are turbulent. This year has definitely been a year of unusual events and situations that we can’t control. However, everyone can benefit from a few simple tips to stay grounded, aim for a less stressful day and take back that feeling of control.

These seven tips can help manage stress and anxiety:

  1. Journal to record your thoughts and feelings. When overwhelmed, ask yourself; “Is this something that I should be worried about in this moment? How can I remove myself from this anxious or fearful thought? What can I do to improve my situation?”
  2. Use your journal to make notes of things that you love and appreciate to create a gratitude mindset. Write down things that you have in your life that you cannot purchase and that you’re grateful for having.
  3. Try to redirect your thoughts and focus to positivity. For example, instead of thinking that you are stuck at home during these uncertain times, take note of your new efficiencies. Take the time that you would have used to drive to work and do something outside. Get up early and enjoy the sunrise.
  4. Remind yourself that there are things you can do to help avoid harmful situations during the pandemic. Educate yourself on how to stay safe during COVID-19 and practice those guidelines. Social distancing and washing your hands are two key components that you can control. Also, choose wisely who you come in contact with, and redirect your interactions with others to virtual get-togethers.
  5. Find ways to stay connected with others. Take virtual breaks with your colleagues or family members. Find an online game that you can play with your favorite far-from-home family member.
  6. Remember to breathe. Focus on your breathing and taking deep cleansing breaths. Take five to 10 minute breaks from work and stretch while practicing deep breathing. Listen to soothing music while you stretch and breath. Take numerous short walks throughout the day.
  7. Finally, remember that there are people that you can reach out to for help. Find someone you can trust and let them know your struggles. Be honest and forthcoming with what is causing you anxiety and stress. Set up a routine call to talk about these feelings.

You are not alone. If you or someone you know is struggling, support is available.
