Unmask Your Message
As we look forward to 2021, it is safe to say that wearing a mask to reduce the spread of COVID-19 is a precaution that is here to stay for some time. As employees begin to go back into the workplace and return to the office, it will become evident that wearing a mask may have an effect on our ability to communicate sincerely and relay the true meaning of our message.
People subconsciously convey different subtle meanings with the way they shape their words and it is harder to understand those indistinct ques while someone speaks from behind a mask.
Now, more than ever, we should strive to have concise, clear and effective communications. Some elements of non-verbal communication, etiquette and speaking technique will need to be consciously adjusted to get our meaning across efficiently.

Here are eight tips gleaned from The Washington Post and Harvard Business Review to reveal the positive message behind your mask:
- Smile. Even though people are unable to see your actual smile, they can still see the way your eyes light up. And when you smile, the corners of your eyes and eyebrows are lifted – revealing a positive disposition.
- Try to raise the volume of your voice slightly, without shouting. Sometimes our speech can be muffled while wearing a mask.
- Articulate your words and speak slower. It will take longer for people to process what has been said, and they will need time to register their thoughts.
- After people have processed what you have said, give them time to respond. If your message is complex, try to pause periodically so others can ask a question or provide a comment.
- While speaking, make sure you are not monotone. Try to fluctuate your voice and use different pitches and tones.
- Active listening is going to play a key role in communicating with people while wearing a mask. Others may be hard to understand, so do your best to pay close attention to what they are saying and look for context from their body language.
- Be sure your body language projects positivity. Face those that you are speaking with and try to make eye contact – make a connection.
- Nodding your head while others are speaking can help ensure them that you are connected, understand and are following along.
Finally, consider that some messages may actually be conveyed better with a video conference. This will enable all parties to speak clearly and precisely, without the hinderance of a mask.
